Quick update

I moved my Twitter widget up to the right hand side of the screen here, since there won’t be much to really write about until some moves are made. I’m trying to retweet things as I see them, especially from our local press folks; I joined Twitter so you don’t have to! I’m not claiming to be on top of everything, but I’ll give it a shot as I can. Hopefully, the five of you will enjoy it.

The current Felix Hernandez rumor is that he’s looking for $100 million over 6 years. I say, PAY THE MAN. Obviously, it’s not quite that easy, but (and I never thought I’d say this about any sports figure and money) I don’t think it’s a bad deal. I’m totally willing to admit that my attitude is tainted with subjectivity, and I’m OK with that. The Baltimore Orioles are looking at the medical records of, among others, our dear Erik Bedard. It would be nice if he could go back to Baltimore – closer to home, still with a team I (lightly) follow, it just seems like the right thing to do. The Jason Bay Tweets have also simmered down a little over the course of the day, so that’s something, though apparently Bay has turned down arbitration…

Listening to Brock & Salk today while waiting to take a final, Mike Salk was saying that the Mariners are currently viewed as the most exciting team at the meetings, and that a lot of other teams are keenly interested in what we might be up to. Brock Huard asked him if we were the “belle of the ball”, and Salk agreed that it was a fairly accurate description of the buzz around the team. Chris Leeper has a little snippet up with Buster Olney saying that obtaining John Lackey would be the best thing we could do. Is it wrong of me to hope that this happens? Am I crazy to even think it might?

Of some small interest to me personally is that Kason Gabbard got picked up by the Boston Red Sox. Gabbard, if you’ll remember, was pitching high and inside for the Rangers with Richie Sexson at the plate in early 2008, and was the unfortunate victim of a batting helmet beat-down. I had wondered what happened to him, and was, quite coincidentally, thinking about it the other day. I think I shall now wonder where a million dollars might be…

“I joined Twitter so you don’t have to!” Just signed up this morning, needed my baseball fix.

Hey, you might be up to six followers now. 😀

Agree re: Felix, six years for $100 million seems about right. Just hope they can get Big Russ signed again – maybe 40 home runs in 2010?

Why not? Exercise that back, and he’ll be fine. 🙂
I don’t know if Larry Stone is on your Tweet list, but he just re-mentioned Rich Harden, who is someone I’d forgotten about with my current Lackey obsession. I’d be fine with either pitcher, but I do think we need another top-of-the-line arm, for sure.

Granderson rumors also still persist, but I guess he’s super-pricey. I’m going to be curious to see if they bother finding a big-name DH, too….

Could they afford Figgins, Bay, Branyan and Harden? That could be fun to watch.

    Ninja Jack!

I can’t remember why it was, but USS Mariner had something up about a week or so ago (might have been longer) on why Jason Bay would not be a great idea – I think it had something to do with the length of time he wanted on the contract. I think I’d be content with Harden and Figgins – Branyan, for some reason, I just assume will get it done. I probably shouldn’t. :/

Felix extention to me is priority #1, but dont really expect it to get done until January. the longer the contract, the bigger my smile.

Part of me Really wants Lackey but the 4th and 5th year of a contract I have a bad feeling would suck donkeyb*lls.

With the Number of corner OF/1B/DH available in FA…. I hope Jack waits a little and lets the price come down….to fill 1B/DH…there are a ton of them available that can hit near the middle of the lineup.

  6. section331 says:

Y’know, I don’t know that I remember what Lackey was interested in, time-wise. Is it 4 years? That seems lengthy to me – currently, the word is that talks between him and the Angels have been going well, so maybe we need to focus on Harden…

I understand you have to spend money to make money, but I’m hoping that Felix gets first dibs on our cash – the good news is, this FA business apparently doesn’t have an impact on anything Felix-related, so they say…

After reading Stone’s Blog today I feel better about signing Felix. Having him as the ace for 6 years would be nice. Having a strong number 2 would also be pretty sweet.

Big Russ has a touchy back, but he can sure hit when he’s feeling good. Think he still has a couple of good years left.

  8. section331 says:

I agree – I’d love to see Branyan come back. I had no problems with his fielding, and when his bat was good, it was very, very good. He was also kind of a nice story from last year, utility guy makes everyday player, that sort of thing…

  9. Craig D says:

My prediction is Harden, Branyan or Nick Johnson, and some crazy deal that will come out of the blue from Jack Z that makes everyone Gasp.

  10. section331 says:

See, and that sounds doable to me – the crazy thing is where the fun comes in. I keep mentally low-balling us, thinking that we might have another good year next year, but that they’ll never go for some big name – yet they just did that, and it sounds like they have money enough to do it again.

Now, I guess it’s just a matter of how long it will take them to do it all – didn’t they wait until the last minute last year?

  11. Craig D says:

The Putz trade last year was during the Winter meetings, most of the other smaller trades were done in January.

Jack has ALOT more options this year….last year he had Zero $$ to aquire players (even in a trade, he couldnt take any on, because the Mariners were already over budget)

Last year, there was Plan A and maybe a plan B.
    This year…with so many options…there is a Plan A through Plan M.
And Jack’s approach of not letting the Media have a clue what he is doing before hand….well….it makes the offseason unpredictable….(other GMs love to say stuff about their players)

I think he is gonna make another serious move/signing before January…but I also think he is gonna hold some $$ in reserve for January/Feb and pick up quality bargains.
Kinda like The Angels Did last year with Abreau….they were patient…..knew the salary price was gonna come down….and they got him for 5 million, instead of the 10+ million if they signed him early.

This year there is a TON of Free Agents with Talent…and not alot of Teams with money to spend….Once ya get past the Biggest names…ya got 20 players for 10 slots (just an example)

Just heard that Beltre declined arbitration.
