No Fridays at SafeCo today – laptop still in the shop with all my photos on it – but I do have a press release from the good folks at the Everett AquaSox organization. If you’d care to read further about the whos and the whats from a member of the blogsosphere, Jay Yenich did a preview of the team a few days ago. In any event, their season starts tonight in an away game…
EVERETT, Wash. – The wait is over, and it’s time to “Unleash the E.” Tonight – Friday, June 18, at 7:05 p.m. – marks the beginning of the 2010 Everett AquaSox baseball season. The AquaSox open on the road for a three-game series at the 2009 Northwest League champion Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.
Most of the AquaSox players arrived in town last Sunday with a few later arrivals throughout the week. The team had a full week of practice in preparation for tonight’s opener, along with an exhibition game Wednesday night against the Everett Merchants. The AquaSox lost the game 10-5.
Twenty-one-year-old Yoervis Medina will take the mound tonight for the first start of the season against the Volcanoes. Medina, a 6’3” righty from Puerto Cabello, Venezuela, will make his first start in the United States after spending the first four years of his career in the Venezuelan Summer League. He had a combined record of 14-13 and a 2.89 ERA.
The opening night roster, which is expected to have some changes before the home opener Monday, June 21, features five former AquaSox players beginning another season in Everett. Outfielder Jose Rivero spent the majority of the 2009 season in Everett, while infielders Fred Bello and Kevin Mailloux each played a few games for the Frogs last season.
Former AquaSox Fray Martinez (2009) and Ogui Diaz (2006, 2007) share an intriguing history in that they are both converted position players. Diaz was an infielder when he played in Everett for parts of the 2006 and 2007 seasons, and returns three years later as a right-handed pitcher after stints with Clinton (Class-A), High Desert (Class-A Advanced), Pulaski and Peoria (Rookie affiliates). Martinez began his career in the Dominican Summer League as an infielder for two seasons before being converted to a pitcher in 2008. He spent 15 games of the 2009 season with the AquaSox, throwing 21.2 innings with an ERA of 4.98 and one save.
Friday’s roster includes five 2010 Seattle Mariners draft picks. The AquaSox receive four Mariners pitching prospects in fifth round selection Stephen Pryor, 18th rounder Willy Kesler, 34th round selection Tyler Whitney and Seattle-native Forrest Snow, selected in the 36th round. Outfielder Robbie Anston out of Boston College was drafted in the 26th round.
Manager Jose Moreno’s projected rotation for the rest of the series at Salem-Keizer has southpaw Anthony Fernandez pitching Saturday and right-hander Eric Thomas on the hill for the finale on Sunday.
The AquaSox return to Everett for the home opener on Monday, June 21, at 7:05 p.m. at Everett Memorial Stadium against the Yakima Bears. Righty Chris Sorce gets the ball to begin the AquaSox home campaign, followed on Tuesday night by left-hander Edlando Seco.
Opening night begins a five-game homestand packed with fun promotions and giveaways. The first 1,000 fans on Monday night receive a 2010 magnet schedule, courtesy of Cascade Rehabilitation Associates and Summit Rehabilitation. A postgame firework show will light up the night sky following the final out, while the rest of the series includes Magic Night, Inflatable’s Night, a Lil’Kinz giveaway and more!
