Hey folks. First off, no Fridays at Safeco this week, as Megan is incredibly busy today. She will be at tonight’s game, however, and will have her usual game post up tomorrow complete with pictures.
As I’m sure you all know by now, Cliff Lee has been traded to the Texas Rangers for a package headlined by Justin Smoak, and that will include three other prospects who are as of yet unidentified. Also moving to Texas in the deal are Mark Lowe (one of Megan’s favorites, unfortunately), and $2.5 million to help the Rangers balance out the $4 million still due to Lee this year. I’ll update you more as I get information, especially who those three prospects are.
In any case, however, this has been a very interesting day for the Mariners and their future.
Smoak is a premium, premium prospect. A switch-hitting first baseman who can hit for high contact and power, Smoak also has a great, patient approach at the plate and is a good defender at first base. He is our first baseman both now and for the future, and should also provide both Megan and headline writers around the state great fun coming up with punny headlines.
Also, I want to thank Cliff Lee for being Cliff Lee. He’s been fantastic to watch pitch in a Mariner uniform, and it’s truly been a privilege to have in Seattle. I expanded on this in an open letter to Lee over on ProBall Northwest.
UPDATE– The other three prospects have been announced as RHP Blake Beavan, 2B/OF Matt Lawson, and RHP Josh Lueke. I’ll have a post up looking at the trade on a whole later on today.
