Fridays at SafeCo

I get email updates from the Seattle Times every morning. Today, they posted their “Swing Away, Fans” entries, poetry, haikus, and otherwise where people were allowed to express their frustrations at this season. If you can stand to read the entirety of it, you’re a stronger person than I. What I did read has not set a positive tone for an already-sleepless Friday, so I figured I’d post some photos here instead. Some people might argue that fans like me are part of the problem, because I go to games regardless of the status of the team. I just like baseball, folks – yes, it’s been disappointing baseball in the extreme this year, and I’m sure I could fill pages with complaint after complaint, but I don’t plan to do that. It takes more energy for me to be angry at the team than it does for me to enjoy a day at the ballpark. And recently, I did just such a thing, on Felix Day against the Oakland A’s…

Felix and Adam Moore stretch while the bullpen catcher and new pitching coach have a chat on the field before the game.

Brad Adam of FSN and Jay Buhner chat on-air while Bill Krueger stands near the fence giving autographs. No, I’m not kidding.

Felix Hernandez, warming up in the bullpen.

Usually, my goal is to take photos of the team without their awareness of my presence, which is normally fairly easy because there are so many other people taking pictures too. Also, now that my hair is not as bright as it used to be, that’s a little easier. I didn’t notice this one until I uploaded it at home. Oops.

The bullpen, getting ready for their pregame ritual, like they do.

I’d post more – I took over 100 photos that night – but they will have to be saved for later, as the time is coming for me to go spend another tiring day at school.

Have a great Friday, everyone!

Some of the comments to the Times were a bit over the top, but I think that fans have a right to vent a bit, given how miserable the season has been so far. I was expecting the M’s would win about half of their games and be second in the division, not have a mortal lock on last place. Oh well.

It has been interesting that they seem to be playing a bit better for the new manager. Probably just an interim gig, but hope that Brown is considered when they look for a permanent replacement for Wak.

Good picture of the bullpen. It looked like they were surprised that your hair wasn’t as bright as usual. πŸ˜‰

I think people have every right to vent, of course – but reading all of them in a row like that was pretty depressing. I try and stay as upbeat as possible about this team and game – like a lot of other people, I consider it my escape, so having them doing badly is heartwrenching. And hearing other people vent how I sometimes feel as well over and over was not the way to start off a nice Friday.

After looking at my photos again while I was posting this, I’m sort of wondering whether or not League and Aardsma might have been messing with me – the photo right after that in the series, they’re looking at each other talking – and I had my finger down on the shutter. I guess we’ll see what happens the next time I’m there. πŸ™‚

There was one comment posted on the Times that I thought was kinda funny: “Your 2010 Seattle Mariners: We Leave More Men on Base than the U.S. Army!”

Next time, try wearing a helmet and see if they recognize you. πŸ™‚
